Acupuncture for Fertility

Chinese medicine has been used for thousands of years to promote conception, a healthy pregnancy and birth.

Carefully chosen acupuncture points and herbal formulas are highly effective to increase fertility and stabilize pregnancy.

Research suggests the following positive effects of acupuncture in promoting fertility:

1.   Acupuncture can increase the thickness of uterine lining by promoting blood flow to the uterus.
2.   Acupuncture can regulate hormones to improve ovarian function which may produce better quality eggs and a larger number of follicles.
3.   Acupuncture treatments may reduce the side effects of drugs used in ART procedures.
4.   Acupuncture can prevent uterine contractions to encourage implantation.
5.   Acupuncture relaxes the patient by reducing the release of stress hormones, thereby calming anxiety.
6.   Acupuncture strengthens the immune system and supports general health, possibly helping to prevent miscarriage.

Success Rates
Women who receive acupuncture can significantly improve their chances of conception, either naturally or using ART. On average, 60-70% of the women who come to this office conceive and successfully deliver healthy babies. A study released in April 2002 in Fertility & Sterility Journal proved acupuncture's effectiveness in increasing the success of IVF. In the study, the patients who received acupuncture before and after the embryo transfer increased their success rate from 25% to 42%.

Including Acupuncture in IVF Protocols
Our practitioners generally work with women from the beginning of the IVF protocol. Women frequently choose to come to our office prior to the transfer procedure. When requested, our practitioners are available to accompany women to their transfer site for acupuncture immediately before the procedure.

Increasing Male Fertility
If your partner has been diagnosed with a low sperm count or motility problems, acupuncture and herbs may be able to help based on a study recently presented at the world conference of the America Society for Reproductive Medicine. The study suggested up to ten treatments prior to any lab-assisted fertility procedure.
